Hi Everyone! There’s a few more weeks left in 2024 but I know you are already filling your calendar with events, meetings and trainings.

I’ve created my Person Centered Thinking Training Calendar for 2025….. my gift to you!!! Print it, hang it where you do you work. Use is as a guide to practice your PCT skills throughout the year.

Set aside 30 or 60 minutes each month to review your notes and activities from your recent PCT Training.

I know there are so many other trainings you need to squeeze in your calendar but remember that old saying…… “If you don’t use it, you lose it”. Same goes for PCT skills.

Follow me on social media and here. I’ll give you tips, reminders and encouragement to keep you going throughout the year.

And as always. If you need any PCT support please don’t hesitate to reach out.

It’s January!

Right now, look at your calendar and find 30 to 60 minutes where you and your team/family/support team can reflect on this skill.

Important To and Important For (and the Balance between them) is one of the core concepts of Person Centered Thinking. It is linked to each skill and something to always keep in mind when negotiating support and resolving conflict.

Look back on your notes from your recent PCT Training. Remember the differences between those things that are Important TO you and Important FOR you.

One common misconception about Person Centered Thinking is that people get whatever they want all the time. We know that’s not the case, there’s more to it. It’s about BALANCE!

Sometimes to get that balance there are trade offs, or compromises, and an opportunity to gain a different perspective or knowledge.

How can you strike that balance?

As always, if you need help making space for PCT in your life or with your team let me know how I can help.

One Page Profiles are a great opportunity to introduce yourself in a way that you want people to know you better!

I can’t emphasize this enough….. Whoever the One Page Profile is about… that person MUST be a part of making it! I know from working in Human Services we have so many things on our plates. MAKE INTENTIONAL TIME to meet with people, talk with them, know them better and understand how they want other people to get to know them.

(continuing my rant)…… While we may think, “but I’ve worked with them for so long, I know what they are going to say”. Doesn’t matter! They need to be a part of creating this. Things in life change…. I know I’m not the same person I was 5 years ago. Don’t assume you know someone, hear it from them.

You got this!

The Relationship Map is a great way to learn more about someone and those people they TRUST! Sometimes we may need to call on those people to get more information or clarity – we want to make sure we are getting info about someone from people they trust and know them best.

I also liked using this as a conversation starter with my kids. Mapping out the people in their lives, the people “we” trust. Meaning the people I as the parent trust, and those people who aren’t in that circle of trust. We all have those neighbors who are well meaning but in an emergency we wouldn’t necessarily TRUST them with our kids. They (our kids) need to know who those trusted people are too!

OK….. this one I truly regret not using when I worked at a Day Program. This is such a valuable tool! We all do something in our own way that others might say “that’s weird” or “I don’t get it” or “oh, she must mean….” but they are totally misunderstanding what you really mean.

The Communication Chart helps everyone be better understood!

Here’s another take. If you work in Human Services you have probably run across a situation like this. “Jack” works sooooooo well with “Arturo”, he just gets him. And they truly work well together and understand each other very well. “Jack” may even be described by his co-workers as, “the only one who knows how to work with Arturo”. While we all have preferences of who we work with, as a person working in Human Services we are doing no one a favor by keeping all that valuable information we know and learn about someone, to oursleves.

Use the Communication Chart to share that information with other people.

You got this, now hop to……

“But I don’t work with people day to day, I’m just a Service Coordinator (Care Coordinator)”. I hear this all to often and I’m not mad at you for it but here’s a reminder.

During training while we do the Morning Routine as an activity there are SOOOOOOOOOOOOO many different rituals and routines that a person has in their life. REMEMBER, this is a way to discover more about the person and the things that are Important To them.

Soapbox time…… Don’t let the activity distract you from the point of the skill.

KNOW PEOPLE BETTER – from their perspective.

Ok, I’m off my soapbox now.
